Portfolio

This week I’m referencing an article written by Alain Briot, entitled How to Create a Portfolio of Your Work:  http://www.luminous-landscape.com/columns/portfolio-8.shtml

It’s clear from the beginning of the article that Mr. Briot is addressing the subject of a printed portfolio, rather than a digital one.  He says,  “…in my view a portfolio is not a portfolio unless it consists of images printed on paper. Why? For the simple reason that in my eyes a final image is an image on paper, not an image on a computer monitor.”

Now, I like the idea of a beautiful binding, containing images printed on beautiful paper.  A printed portfolio can be a work of art in itself.  But, in the digital age, the use that I have for a printed portfolio doesn’t begin to match the expense it would take to create one.  In fact, I have a portfolio that I haven’t updated in years, because in all that time no potential client has asked to see it.  They’ve been satisfied with viewing my images via the internet before deciding to hire me.  And also, I have to admit to a frequent feeling of dissatisfaction when seeing a printed version of a favorite image for the first time.  I miss the light coming through the image from behind, the way it does on a computer screen.

I believe there’s a place for both printed and digital images.  But the pleasure of handling and showing a beautiful printed portfolio isn’t enough for me to justify the business expense.  So I ask you – are you using a printed portfolio?  If so, when and how do you find it useful?

No Time Like the Present

In almost every Professional Program group at WSP, you’ll find at least one student who has worked in another field for many years, and is switching tracks to follow their dream of a career in professional photography. Here is a really lovely story of our graduate Mike Kane, who has done precisely that. Take a moment to read it for encouragement. It really isn’t too late.
